![]() López Obrador made a similar plea to the Pope and the King of Spain last year that was outwardly rejected by the Spanish government, who responded that “the arrival of the Spanish 500 years ago to present-day Mexican lands cannot be judged in light of contemporary considerations. Native people, he said, deserve “a sincere commitment that never again will disrespectful acts be committed against their beliefs and cultures.” In a two-page letter to Pope Francis requesting the manuscripts, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador also asked for an apology from the Catholic church for its role in the oppression of Indigenous communities. By the end of the century, the native population had dropped from 22 million to 2 million, ravaged by epidemics and relentless warfare. ![]() The fall of the empire’s capital, Tenochtitlan, marks the start of centuries of Spanish rule in central Mexico. Indigenous communities made many manuscripts and maps in the pre-Hispanic style and used the painted language, often to express their ancient right to lands. On August 13, 1521, a coalition of Spanish and Indigenous fighters captured the Aztec emperor Cuauhtemoc. In fact, the manuscripts described above (the Codices Boturini and Mendoza and the Mapa Sigüenza) were all created in the early colonial era. The Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortés and his army invaded Mexico in 1519. Catholic authorities in colonial Mexico ordered hundreds such manuscripts to be burned in the wake of the 1521 conquest. Most examples of pre-conquest codices suffered a worse fate. ![]() "Maya" is actually a potentially even broader label, and there's dozens of other Mesoamerican civilizations beyond the Aztec and Maya too, etc.Of the Codex Borgia (via Wikimedia Commons) I'd encourage you to shoot me a PM (a message, not a chat) or even better if you have a twitter or a discord, to direct message on twitter / MajoraZ#7023 on discord they are somebody I collaborate with who would likely be faster to reply then I would (if you don't have a twitter or discord then just messaging me is fine), both of us have a lot of contacts with other mesoamerican researchers and the like and either of us would be happy to anwer further questions or give you more resources about iconography and documents as well as Mesoamerican generally (which frankly you should probably read about before/alongside looking ayt manuscripts, the askhistorians pastebin in my trio of resource posts and other links I give are a good starting place if you binge everything)Īs far ad the image you posted, that's from the Codex Magliabechiano, which is "Aztec", though Aztec is a bit of a messy term that can mean a few different things, as I explain here. That being said, you may benefit from the second comment in my trio of resource comments, which can be found here: The first is noting various Mesoamerican accomplishments, the third is a summerized timeline of Mesoamerican history, but the second/middle one gives suggested sources and lists some of the more widely known/documented manuscripts. I've been compiling my own list and with links to sites that have scans of them, but it's unsorted and isn't ready for public consumption yet. There is, sadly, not a centralized list of all Mesoamerican manuscripts online, in part because defining what counts as Mesoamerican is iffy (some are totally Prehispanic, some were made by indigenous scribes under Spanish rule, some were made by Spanish friars merely employing or consulting indigenous nobles and historians, etc), and in part because of the language barrier, as some do not have english translated annotations yet. ![]()
